The island was inhabited until the end of the 19th century, afterward the access has been forbidden to common people due to the presence of a penal colony, which was turned into a maximum security prison in the second half of the 20th century, especially destined to mafia prisoners. But at the end of the ‘90s, the project of a natural park, so long awaited by the local people, was finally actualized. Its symbol is the famous albino mule, a particular beloved animal, with its sweet and tender aspect inspiring a sense of veneration, beauty and uniqueness. But on the island live also grey mules, horses, moufflons, turtles, hares, wild pigs and goats (these last two in excess for the delicate balance of the island), and many sea species. This area is really precious for the preservation and protection of many rare species, or under risk of extinction. The visit of this park obviously requires respect of the rules and prohibitions, which are necessary to protect the environment and to make us enjoy it at its fullest. A restricted area of the park is totally inaccessible, but 90% of the territory is completely accessible, though following the park rules and the general recommendations of common sense. For instance, children should not pull the animals tail or running after them screaming, or even causing them injuries or traumas. And parents should not consider the park as the baby parking of a tourist village, leaving their children alone.
Not a single tourist guide would be so rude to remind you of these prescriptions, but prudence is never enough when it comes down to Italian vacationers…
With that in mind, if you get to the Asinara Island for the first time, you’d better turn to a guide to discover the beauties of the island in a deeper and professional way and to learn about the history of the men and women who lived here in the past. Those who have been on the island before should take the chance to enjoy it autonomously, choosing among a wide range of activities, such as trekking, bicycling, horse riding, diving or sailing around the island. And each of these activities can be accompanied by a pleasant swimming in one of the many beautiful coves where bathing is permitted. And in the near future it will be also possible to stay overnight on the island: the awakening in this oasis is something you will hardly forget…
